WhatsApp Ads in Nigeria: Click-to-WhatsApp + Status Ads

Turn ad taps into real conversations with click-to-WhatsApp and the new in-app Status ads.

How to run WhatsApp ads for a business in Nigeria in 2026, hero showing an ad turning into a real WhatsApp conversation

In 2026 you can run WhatsApp ads in Nigeria two ways. Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) ads run on Facebook and Instagram and open a WhatsApp chat when someone taps them; you build them in Meta Ads Manager with a connected WhatsApp Business account, using the Engagement objective with WhatsApp as the conversion location. Status Ads are the newer option: full-screen adverts that appear between Status updates inside WhatsApp itself, with a "Send Message" button that opens a chat. Both do the same magic trick, turning an ad into a real conversation on the app Nigerians already check all day.

Why WhatsApp is the ad that actually gets answered

I've run Meta ads for Nigerian businesses since 2012, and if there's one thing that has stayed true the whole time, it's this: we do business on WhatsApp. Not email, not a contact form nobody checks, not a phone call people let ring out. WhatsApp. So the smartest ad you can run here is the one that ends with a message landing in the app you have open anyway.

That's the whole idea behind WhatsApp advertising. Instead of paying to send a stranger to a website where they poke around and leave, you pay to start a conversation. And a conversation is where Nigerian businesses close. If you've read my guides on running Facebook ads or Instagram ads, this is the destination I kept pointing you toward. This guide is about making WhatsApp itself the campaign.

First, kill the old myth: "you can't run ads inside WhatsApp"

This is the line I still hear every week, and it's out of date. It was true once. It isn't now.

As of 2026 there are two separate WhatsApp ad surfaces, and it helps to hold them apart in your head:

  1. Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA): ads that run on Facebook and Instagram and click through to a WhatsApp chat. These have been around a while and they're the workhorse.
  2. Ads inside WhatsApp itself: the new part. WhatsApp now shows Status Ads and Promoted Channels in its Updates tab. This rolled out globally through 2025 and finished in December 2025, so it's live in Nigeria now, and almost nobody here is talking about it yet.

If you take the second one seriously before your competitors do, you're early to a placement most Nigerian businesses don't even know exists. That's a rare thing in a crowded ad market.

Surface one: click-to-WhatsApp ads (the workhorse)

A click-to-WhatsApp ad looks like a normal Facebook or Instagram ad. The difference is the button. Instead of "Learn More" sending someone to a website, the tap opens a WhatsApp chat with you, often with a first message already typed so the person just hits send. From there it's a normal conversation.

A click-to-WhatsApp ad turns a tap on Facebook or Instagram into a chat you can answer.

Here's how to set one up properly.

  1. Connect a WhatsApp Business account. You need the WhatsApp Business app or the Business Platform, and it has to be connected to your Facebook Page and ad account. This is the step people skip, and then wonder why the option is greyed out.
  2. Build the campaign in Meta Ads Manager, not the Boost button. Same rule as every other Meta campaign: the real controls live in Ads Manager. Choose the Engagement objective and set WhatsApp as the conversion location. That tells Meta the win you want is a message, and it goes looking for people likely to send one.
  3. Pick a format that earns the tap. CTWA supports image, video, carousel and slideshow. A short vertical video or a clean single image with an offer worth asking about will out-pull a busy flyer every time.
  4. Write the pre-filled first message with intent. You can set the opening line the person sends you. Make it specific, something like "Hi, I saw your ad about [offer], can you tell me more?" It lowers the effort to start and it tells you exactly which ad the lead came from.
  5. Answer fast. When someone messages you from a CTWA ad, WhatsApp gives you a 72-hour window to reply freely inside the conversation. Use it. Speed of reply is part of the ad, and a lead that sits unread for two days is money you set on fire. I've watched businesses with plain creative beat rivals with beautiful creative purely because they answered in two minutes.

That's the flagship. For most Abuja service businesses closing deals on chat, it's the first WhatsApp campaign I'd run, and it's usually the cheapest way to buy an actual enquiry. I've put the real numbers on that in the cost guide, where click-to-WhatsApp comes out as the lowest-cost enquiry format in Nigeria right now.

Surface two: ads inside WhatsApp (Status ads and Promoted Channels)

This is the new frontier, and it's worth understanding before your market catches up.

Status ads: full-screen adverts inside WhatsApp, with a Send Message button.

Open WhatsApp and look at the Updates tab, the one that holds Status and Channels. That tab, and only that tab, is where WhatsApp now shows ads. Your personal chats and calls stay exactly as they were.

Status Ads. These are full-screen adverts, sized 9:16 like a Story, that appear between the Status updates you're already tapping through. They carry a "Send Message" button that, you guessed it, opens a chat with the business. So even an ad seen inside WhatsApp ends in the same place: a conversation. If you've made vertical creative for Instagram Stories, you already have the raw material for a Status ad.

Promoted Channels. WhatsApp Channels are the broadcast side of the app, a way for a business to post one-to-many updates people can follow. Promoted Channels let you pay to get yours discovered in that same Updates tab. It's a slower, audience-building play rather than a direct-response one, but for a brand planning to be around for years, owning a followed Channel is a quiet compounding asset.

Because this placement is so new in Nigeria, "whatsapp status ads" and "how to run ads on whatsapp status" are questions people are only starting to type, and very few local pages answer them well. That's the first-mover opening. It's also a genuinely global shift, which means getting good at it now positions you well beyond Abuja.

The privacy question, answered honestly

WhatsApp business advertising in Nigeria, showing ads and Promoted Channels only in the Updates tab while personal chats and calls stay ad-free
WhatsApp ads live only in the Updates tab; personal chats stay ad-free.

The first thing careful people ask is, "if WhatsApp shows ads, is it reading my chats?" It's a fair worry, and the honest answer is the reassuring one.

The ads live only in the Updates tab. Your personal messages, calls and groups stay ad-free, and WhatsApp does not use the content of your messages, your calls, your contacts or your groups to target ads. The targeting leans on a limited set of signals instead: your account details, your device, a general sense of location, and how you engage with Status and Channels. For a business, that privacy-first design is not a limitation to apologise for. It's a reason to feel comfortable advertising here, and a reason your customers will feel comfortable seeing you.

So which WhatsApp ad should you run?

Keep it simple. If you want enquiries this week, start with click-to-WhatsApp on Facebook and Instagram. It's proven, it's direct, and it drops a real conversation into your app. If you're building awareness and want to be seen inside WhatsApp where attention already is, layer in Status ads, especially if you've got vertical video ready. If you're playing a longer game and want an audience you can message again and again, grow and promote a Channel.

Most businesses I work with begin with one CTWA campaign done well, then expand into the in-app placements once they're seeing conversations come through. One motion, several paths, all of them ending in a chat.

One more thing worth doing early: read your first fifty conversations like research, not just leads. The questions people keep asking, the objections they raise, the exact words they use, all of it tells you how to sharpen the next ad and the offer behind it. A WhatsApp campaign is a feedback machine as much as a sales one, and the businesses that treat it that way pull ahead of the ones just counting replies.

Should you run these yourself or hire someone?

Honest answer, same as I give for the other platforms. If you're testing with a small spend and you like tinkering, set up a click-to-WhatsApp campaign yourself using the steps above and learn how the conversations feel. It's the best way to understand your own customers.

The point to bring in help is when it starts to matter. When the volume of chats outgrows your ability to answer them fast, when you want Status ads and Channels working together, when a bad week of ads is a real dent in revenue, that's when a manager pays for themselves by lowering your cost per conversation and keeping the replies quick. I'll be straight about who we're for: businesses ready to invest properly in growth, not someone looking to boost one post and hope. If that's you, the figures in the cost guide are a starting point, and the real number depends on how much you're putting to work.

A quick-start checklist

  • WhatsApp Business account set up and connected to your Facebook Page and ad account
  • First campaign built in Meta Ads Manager, not the Boost button
  • Engagement objective, WhatsApp set as the conversion location
  • A pre-filled first message that names the offer, so you know which ad each lead came from
  • Vertical (9:16) creative ready, so it works for both Stories and Status ads
  • A plan to reply inside the 72-hour window, ideally within minutes
  • Status ads considered as a second layer once CTWA is running
  • A WhatsApp Channel started if you want a long-term, followable audience

Work down that list and you're running WhatsApp ads more deliberately than almost any business in Abuja, including on a placement most of them don't know is live yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I run WhatsApp ads in Nigeria?

Two ways. Run click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram (built in Meta Ads Manager, Engagement objective, WhatsApp as the conversion location), or run Status ads that appear inside WhatsApp's Updates tab with a Send Message button. Both open a chat.

Can you really run ads inside WhatsApp now?

Yes. WhatsApp Status ads and Promoted Channels rolled out globally through 2025 and are live in Nigeria. They appear only in the Updates tab; personal chats and calls stay ad-free.

What is a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

A normal Facebook or Instagram ad whose button opens a WhatsApp chat instead of a website, often with a first message pre-filled. It's the most direct way to turn an ad into a conversation.

Do I need a WhatsApp Business account?

Yes. You need a WhatsApp Business account connected to your Facebook Page and ad account before you can run click-to-WhatsApp or in-app ads.

Are WhatsApp Status ads private?

The ads use only limited signals such as account details, device and general location, plus how you engage with Status and Channels. WhatsApp does not use your message content, calls, contacts or groups, and your personal chats stay ad-free.

How much do WhatsApp ads cost in Nigeria?

That's its own topic. See how much Facebook and Instagram ads cost in Nigeria, where click-to-WhatsApp comes out as the lowest-cost enquiry format right now.

Which is better, click-to-WhatsApp or Status ads?

Start with click-to-WhatsApp for direct enquiries this week. Add Status ads to be seen inside WhatsApp once that's running. They work best together.

Ready to turn ad taps into conversations?

I've run Meta ads for Nigerian businesses since 2012, and WhatsApp is where I've watched the most enquiries actually turn into customers. I'll look at your setup honestly: whether your WhatsApp Business account is connected properly, whether your ads point at a real chat, and whether Status ads are worth adding. No lock-in, no jargon.
